Caterpillar Machine Development Center

O’Brien Atkins’ relationship with Caterpillar dates back to the early 1990s.  The team has designed numerous small to large renovations and new projects at the Clayton and Sanford, NC, sites.

O’Brien Atkins assisted Caterpillar with an extensive study of multiple sites and analysis of near and long term needs for the design of a new Machine Development Center (MDC.)  This team also worked with Caterpillar on the procurement and master planning of over 250 acres for development across from their existing facility in Clayton.  The phased plan allowed for incorporation of any future county road connection and involved the design and coordination of a temporary modular office complex and test grounds.

The new MDC facility features a refined industrial look produced with modular and economical materials that reduced costs yet preserved quality. The building design allows easy access between design stations, laboratories and the test sites.  Based around a “town hall” and “Main Street” layout, the building allows for flexibility and provides a very livable and comfortable environment.  The completed project included large and small machine shop structures, de-muck/wash facility, utility and shelter structures, guard station and test grounds equipped for 24/7 use. Barnhill Contracting led this design-build team effort.
